JULIO BOCCA

Artistic Director of
Ballet Estable del Teatro Colón

Born on March 6, 1967, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He began his studies at age 4; in 1974, he enrolled at the Escuela Nacional de Danza and in 1975, at the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón.

In 1982, he began his professional career as a principal dancer at the Teresa Carreño Foundation in Venezuela and at Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1983.

In 1985, he won the Gold Medal in his category at the 5th Moscow International Dance Competition, which gave his career a definitive international profile.

In 1986, he was hired as a principal dancer by the American Ballet Theatre, a company with which he performed until 2006.

He has danced with such notable partners as Nina Ananiashvili, Eleonora Cassano, Alessandra Ferri, Cecilia Figaredo, Carla Fracci, Cynthia Gregory, Cynthia Harvey, Paloma Herrera, Susan Jaffe, Julie Kent, Natalia Makarova, Amanda McKerrow, Noelle Pontois, Raquel Rossetti, Cheryl Yeager, Tamara Rojo, and Ludmila Semeniaka, among others. 

He has been invited to perform by the Royal Ballet in London, the Bolshoi in Moscow, the Kirov in Leningrad, La Scala in Milan, La Zarzuela in Madrid, the Royal Danish Ballet in Denmark, the Oslo Opera Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Tokyo Ballet, the  Ballet Nacional de Cuba, the Teatro Municipal de  Santiago de Chile, the Ballet Nacional de Mexico, the Ballet del Teatro General Municipal San Martín, and the Ballet del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1990, he founded his own company, Ballet Argentino, with which he has since toured the world, on extensive tours that have taken them to all five continents, participating in the main event representing Argentina as part of the Millennium Day celebrations at midnight on December 31, 1999, in the city of Ushuaia, in the celebration of the King of Thailand’s birthday, and in the reopening of the Hermitage Palace in St. Petersburg. 

In January 2004, he performed in China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing during the closing gala of the First China International Ballet Festival, held as part of the centennial celebration of George Balanchine’s birth. He participated in the “Benois de la Danse” Gala, which brings together all international-level artists who have been awarded the prize of the same name.

He is a member of the National Dance Council, CID, Paris-UNESCO, and Cultural Ambassador for the MERCOSUR Cities.

He was Director of the SODRE National Ballet of Uruguay from 2010 to 2017. 

Awards and distinctions: 

International Choreographers’ Association at the first edition of the Benois de la Danse Prize, Bolshoi Theatre (1992), María Ruanova Primus Inter Pares (1986), New York Times Dancer of the Year (1987), Knight of the Order of Saint Martin of Tours (1987), Gino Tanni Award for the Arts and Personality of the Year (1990), the latter awarded in France, alongside other notable figures such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta; the Martín Fierro Award from Argentine Television for Best Performance in a Musical Show (1991); the King David Award from the Argentine House in Jerusalem (1996); the Dance Magazine Award (1998); and the Barocco Award in Italy, sponsored by the RAI television network. In December 2006, he was awarded the Clarín de Oro Award for Person of the Year. In April 2007, in recognition of his career, he received the Max Hispanic-American Award for the Performing Arts, presented by the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) in Bilbao, Spain. The Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires designated him as an Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires in December 2007. Tribute for his career and contribution to the world of dance at the “Equinoccio Cultural 2008” at the Spanish Embassy in Buenos Aires (2008); Gold Medal in the Arts awarded by the Kennedy Center International Arts Committee for his achievements and dedication to cultural exchange between Argentina and the United States of America (2008); Certificate of Honor in Dance awarded by the International Dance Council –UNESCO– for his career (2008); María Guerrero Award for his career (2008); Fernando Bujones Award presented by the American Ballet Theatre at the Noche Latina (2008). Juan Bravo Award, from Segovia, Spain, in the Best Dance Performance category.

The Mendoza-based company Wines of Argentina has named him Wine Ambassador.

Culture Award at the Ancient Theater in Ostia, Italy. Italian Spirit Award presented by the Italian Embassy in Argentina. Delmira Agustini Gold Medal, awarded by the President of Uruguay, Dr. Tabaré Vázquez, for his contribution to the country’s arts and culture. Title of the Order of Arts and Letters of France, among others. 

Juan Bautista Alberdi Honorable Mention, the highest honor awarded by the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine National Congress.  

“A Lifetime in Dance” Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the 30th edition of the Miami International Ballet Festival.  

The Lux Ductor Award (guiding light)  by Antonio Banderas at the inaugural TIP TOE International Dance Festival in Málaga, Spain. Held at the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in April 2026, the award recognizes outstanding international dance careers.

He officially retired from dancing as a dancer on December 22, 2007, in the city of Buenos Aires.

Currently, he works as a teacher at various schools and companies around the world, including the English National Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Paris Opera School, Finnish National Ballet, Australian Ballet, San Francisco Ballet School, Houston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and School, Orlando Ballet, Korea Arts, Beijing Competition, La Scala in Milan, and the Royal Swedish Ballet, among others. 

In 2025, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Teatro Colón Ballet in Buenos Aires.
